Famous pilgrimage destinations include Varanasi, one of the oldest living cities in the world; Bodh Gaya in Bihar is the most revered, as it is where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, with the Mahabodhi Temple and Great Buddha Statue as major attractions. Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh is significant for being the place where Buddha gave his first sermon, featuring the Dhamek Stupa and Mulagandha Kuti Vihara.
